So today I was listening to some Armor for Sleep's What To Do When You're Dead. All the music I hear, aka pop music, is always about some frivolous pursuit of happiness. There's no depth to it. Like, something you would play at a tailgate party. I realized today I wasn't intentionally being counter-cultural, I was just fighting the stupidity of the music. Not to be a jerk, I just like music to mean something. Lyrics should have value, not just about two guys who are having a good time. That album has got to be one of the greatest, filled with intense agony, thoughts of death and ultimately, the question of "What is life worth?" lying underneath the entire album. I feel like this "Emo" band gives their audience some deeper-than-pop feelings about life. This album is beyond merely what you play at a tailgate and more along the lines of something you would play walking at night, thinking deep, hard thoughts. All this occurs, of course, while you are being serenaded with great music. To go beyond just singing and composing some terribly-written lyrics and songs about how this guy really likes this one girl: this is my dream as a future musician; I want people to go beyond just thinking about the dumb pleasures that this world is all about and think about things that matter and questions that tear your mind a new one.
And yeah. I know I'm just that Emo kid that sits across from you in Psychology but I aim to be more than that. I want to be that guy who thinks "What the hell is life all about?" while you're off thinking about what you're gonna wear to that party tonight. Slow down. Ask yourself, "What do I want to do with life?" If your answer is "I dunno" then ask yourself "Why haven't I thought about such important things?"
